Police are investigating an “appalling” attack after a lit firework was thrown into a police car with officers inside in Sheffield.
A group of youths were seen approaching a South Yorkshire Police patrol car on Wensley Street in Grimesthorpe on Saturday, October 31.
The youths then threw a lit firework through the door, while officers were still inside the car, luckily no one was injured.
Officers had been responding to a failure to stop at 10.45pm when the attack happened.
Those responsible have been warned that attacks like this on the police “will not be tolerated”.
Sheffield North East Neighbourhoods Inspector Gary Bramhall said: “It is appalling that officers who were simply doing their job, protecting the public, have been targeted in this way.
“Attacks like this place the safety of our officers, and the people they are trying to protect, at risk.
“It is staggering that people would act in such an irresponsible and dangerous way, and incidents like this will not be tolerated.”
The officers were both uninjured in the incident and only minor damage was done to the vehicle.
No arrests have yet been made.
Enquiries are ongoing. If you have any information you are asked to contact 101 quoting incident number 1260 of October 31.
