When Sheffield and South Yorkshire can expect Tier 3 decision

Written by on 19/10/2020

A decision is looming on whether Sheffield and South Yorkshire could be thrust into the harshest Tier 3 restrictions.

Talks are continuing today to decide whether the county should be in the “very high” category of the new coronavirus alert level.

Leaders in South Yorkshire have been talking with the government since Friday as coronavirus cases continue to remain high.

But South Yorkshire Live understands that no decision will be announced today.

It is thought that an announcement will be made later this week on if any extra restrictions will be brought in across the county.

Mayor for the Sheffield City Region, Dan Jarvis tweeted out today to say: “Today local leaders and I will continue talks with @10DowningStreet to make sure #COVID restrictions and proper support go hand in hand.

“We will do what’s needed to protect lives and livelihoods in South #Yorkshire, and that means getting the right arrangements.”

Nonetheless, the threat of Covid-19 shows no signs of going away, with the number of cases and infection rates still among the highest in the country in some areas of Yorkshire. Deaths tolls have risen in recent weeks too.

Kirklees Council leaders are also holding a crunch meeting today to discuss the likelihood of a Tier 3 lockdown for the likes of Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Holmfirth.

Although West Yorkshire leaders said on Friday that Tier 3 had not yet been discussed with No 10 officials, more serious discussions are due to get underway early this week.

It comes as Wales announced today that it will be having a two-week “fire breaker” lockdown from this Friday to try and bring down the number of cases of the virus.
