What Met Office says about snow hitting Sheffield and South Yorkshire

There is a chance that areas of South Yorkshire and Sheffield could see some snowfall today as temperatures have plummeted across the country.

Snow has already fallen across the Yorkshire Dales with some areas seeing up to eight inches of a white stuff in higher areas of North Yorkshire.

Snow ploughs and tractors have been out in force to clear roads in Ribblehead, Hawes and Fleet Moss from 5am today, December 3.

There is also a chance of it falling in Sheffield and other parts of South Yorkshire and Leeds.

Weather forecasters at Net Weather predict that there is around a 50 percent chance that snow could fall in Sheffield today.

Forecasters say that there is a 47 percent risk of snow between 12pm and 3pm increasing to 50 percent between 3pm and 6pm.

In Doncaster there will be a 47 percent chance between 6pm and 9pm.

Odds are slightly higher in Barnsley with the chance between 12pm and 6pm ranging from 54 to 57 percent chance of snowfall.

The Met Office predicts that higher areas of Yorkshire will see some of the white stuff from today until Friday.

The latest forecast for Yorkshire said: “After a chilly and bright start, cloud will increase from the west to bring outbreaks of rain during the afternoon, perhaps turning wintry on the hills.

“Rain is likely to become more persistent during the evening. Feeling colder. Maximum temperature 4 °C.

“Tonight will be cloudy with further showers or longer spells of rain, heavy at times. The rain perhaps turning wintry on the hills. Winds will be freshening later in the night. Cold. Minimum temperature 2 °C.”
