UK reports 378 further COVID deaths and 24,141 cases – down on yesterday’s figures

A further 378 coronavirus deaths have been reported in the UK in the past 24 hours – along with another 24,141 cases.

Thursday’s daily deaths figure is lower than yesterday’s 492 – which was the highest daily number of deaths since 19 May, when 500 were reported.

The number of daily cases was also down on the day before, with 25,177 new coronavirus infections having been reported across the UK on Wednesday.

The new figures come on the first day of a second lockdown in England, which is due to last until 2 December.

The four-week shutdown is “enough” to make a “real impact” on coronavirus infection rates, Boris Johnson said at a Downing Street news conference earlier on Thursday.

The prime minister also expressed his hope of “as normal a Christmas as possible” after the month-long restrictions.

On Thursday, new figures showed that just 59.9% of close contacts of those who have tested positive for COVID-19 were reached by the NHS Test and Trace system.

The fresh contact tracing data is the second-lowest percentage recorded since the scheme launched.
