Terrified neighbours on a Sheffield estate have spoken of their shock and heartbreak after a 28-year-old man was allegedly murdered near their homes.
A block of flats in Club Garden Road in the Highfield area of the city has been cordoned off as of this morning and is now the focus of a murder investigation.
Emergency services were called at around 2.15am on Sunday, November 15, to reports of a man lying in the road and although he was rushed to hospital he died from his injuries.
A 30-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.
Many neighbours were stunned to see the cordon in place this morning having not heard any commotion or noise at the time of the alleged attack.
Mum-of-five Tina Smith, 45, admitted she was heartbroken to hear that a young man had lost his life.
She said: “It’s quite surprising. I’ve been coming here to this part of Sheffield for seven years and I’ve never experienced anything like this.
“I thought it was a really quiet area. You hear about these things happening elsewhere but never on your doorstep.
“It’s very disconcerting and scary to think that this can happen where you live. You read these things on the news and it’s just upsetting because that is somebody’s child, somebody’s relative.
“I had three kids by the time I was 28 and it’s just heartbreaking to be honest. It just makes you wonder what has happened to society.”
Andy, 47, admitted the area is known to have trouble with gangs and he said he carries a knife for his own protection when he walks his dog through the nearby cemetery.
“There are a lot of gangs around here and it is scary to hear about this, especially when it’s on your doorstep,” he said.
A 33-year-old woman, who lives in the block which has been cordoned off by police said she heard no noises in the night and was shocked to find the block sealed off by officers.
She said: “I didn’t hear anything in the night – absolutely nothing.
“It’s horrible to hear, absolutely horrible. There have been problems round here but generally it’s not a bad area. I’ve got good neighbours and having lived here for three years I’m quite happy.”
The 28-year-old man is said to be formally identified later today and police are expected to maintain a visible presence in Club Garden Road during the course of the day.
A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said: “Upon arrival, a 28-year-old man was found with serious injuries. He was taken to hospital but was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.
“A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.
“There is a police presence and cordon at the scene while officers carry out their initial enquiries, and this is expected to remain in place for some time.
“Formal identification and a post-mortem examination is expected to take place later today.”
Police have asked anyone with any information that may help police to call 101 quoting incident number 99 of November 15.
